Borland Road, Fiordland, New Zealand

Borland Road joins Lake Manapouri (West Arm) to the highway connecting Te Anau and Tuatapere and the bottom of the South Island.  We assume it was put in to service the power pylons going from the power station at Lake Manapouri and the aluminion smelter at Ti Wai Point near Bluff.

Our weather forecast was "Severe Weather Watch - Heavy rain and strong winds" so we thought a drive might be better than a walk today, so we chose to explore Borland Road up to the pass.  It was spectacular!  We didn't get a drop of rain, and even managed a short walk up through the trees and out above the treeline.  We didn't last long out there, as the winds gusts were quite strong.

Lower down we did a short walk in the beech forest.  These are the flowers of the marbleleaf, or putaputaweta.

We were lucky to see native mistletoe in flower.  It lives high up on the silver beech tree so this was taken with my telephoto lens.
