Ben Lomond Peak, Queenstown, New Zealand

Ben Lomond is a 1,748 metre (5,250 ft approx) peak dominating Queenstown.  We started our walk at the top of the gondola (which saved us 400 metre of ascent) but it was still 930 m (2,800 ft approx) to the summit.  This was a fairly major climb for us, so we were thrilled to make it all the way to the top.  Our track notes described it  "This is a serious climb, and reaching the peak requires plenty of good old-fashioned kiwi grunt."  I'm not sure about the old-fashioned part, but I do agree with the "grunt".

I did not take my camera as I did not want to carry the extra weight, so these are Richard's photos.   Walking time was 5 hours, with a great lunch break at the top.  Lots of other people did the walk today, but apart from one other couple our age, everyone else looked about half that.  We were not aware of any other kiwis on the mountain, as  everyone else seemed to be overseas tourists from every corner of the globe.

About one third of the way up.

Lunch at the summit.  That's Moke Lake you can see on the left hand side.
