Crater Lake is 1,943 ft deep, which makes it the deepest lake in the United States. It is noted for its deep blue colour and its water clarity. No rivers flow in or out of it .There is a rim road which goes all the way round, but when we were here only half of it was open, as there was still lots of snow around. Crater Lake Lodge receives an average of 44 ft of snow a year!
There is access down to the lake at one point. It is a steep walk back up again, but well worth it. The photo below was taken on the walk down. I love the lichen growing on this tree, which presumably had suffered during a winter storm.
