Taihape, Rangitikei

Totally terrific Taihape (town slogan) is also known as the Gumboot Capital of the World and holds its annual iconic Gumboot Day in March.  Indeed, we did see a family walking down the main street this afternoon, all wearing gumboots.

Taihape Town Hall

Taihape Town Hall is beautifully presented and reminds me of the art deco buildings of Napier.  We did drive the Napier - Taihape Road (over the Gentle Annie) which is one of New Zealand's remoter highways.  No "civilisation" (i.e. petrol stations, shops, cafes, toilets or picnic areas) for a hundred and something  rugged and scenic kilometers.  I can also report that the Taihape Cafe 'Soul' does a perfect (for my tastebuds) Flatwhite.
