Driving from Hanmer Springs to Reefton, we crossed over the Lewis Pass, the lowest of the three road passes in the Southern Alps. Right at the pass we set off on a 5 hour walk up to the Lewis Tops. It was 2 hours hard walking uphill, 1 hour lunch and recovery and a short walk along the tops, and 2 hours downhill, equally hard because it was so steep, and slippery with lots of tree roots. By the time we made it back to the car, my knees were quivering, we had had a couple of minor falls, and I put my camera down and it took off by itself and rolled down the hill! Luckily both humans and cameras were intact. We also had a great sense of achievement.

It felt like it was Top of the World. Note the tussock grass all blowing in the same direction. By the time we turned around to come down it was blowing a gale.
