Oualeme River Crossing, Grande Terre, New Caledonia

Crossing the Oualeme River by a small car ferry was quite an experience.  There is no bridge so this is the only way across.  The ferry runs 24/7 and is free, and can take four or five cars at a time.  I was quite relieved when Richard told me that the ferry is actually attached to a cable so it can't get swept downstream and out to sea.

The ferry arriving.

This was taken from a lockout a few minutes drive after docking on the other side.  This is the Oualeme River mouth.  The rugged coastline can also be seen.

Taken from the same lookout but looking up the river.  That little white dot is the ferry starting it journey back to the southern side.
