Whale Tail, Eden, NSW

Eden, NSW has a long history of whaling.  Nowadays it is whale watching, in September, October and November as the humpbacked whales migrate from the warmer waters of the Pacific down the eastern coast of Australia to the cooler Antarctic region to feed on krill during the summer months.

This was taken from Lookout Point, where watchers used to spot the whales.  When a whale was sighted the small, wooden whaling boats would be launched, to try to chase and harpoon the whale.

When the whale is going to leave the surface and dive deep it gives a great display of it's tail.  Unfortunately for whale watchers, it means it will be staying under for 10 - 20 minutes and may surface in a different location.  There were lots of whales to be seen this morning on my whale watching trip, but very few were putting on a show.  The colour markings on the tails and flukes are all unique and researches try and track individuals as they migrate.
