Coober Pedy Underground Churches

The small Catacomb Anglican Church was developed from an old dugout and opened as an underground church in 1977.  It is cut out of sandstone in the shape of a cross.  The simple wooden cross, and communion table are fashioned from local mulga wood and an old miner winch.

The Serbian Orthodox Church is much larger, with stained glass windows, carvings, and a huge arched roof.  There were no chairs, and I was told the congregation stands for the services.

Walking down into the main auditorium.

The walls and roof are all natural sandstone.
