Alaskan Pipeline

The 1,200 km long Alaskan Pipeline transverses Alaska in a north south direction, taking oil from Prudhoe Bay in the north, to the port, Valdez, in the south.  It was built in 1974-1977 with the biggest problem being permafrost.  Some of the pipeline is above ground and some underground.   On our drive from Fairbanks to Valdez we were in close proximity for much of the time.

An above ground section.

The port in Valdez is across the inlet from the town.
