Silver Sword Plant

This plant is endemic to the Hawaiian volcanoes and lives at high altitude in an environment few plants can survive in.  It has a life span of up to fifty years, and once it flowers the plant dies.  In the past it was grazed on by wild goats and is now endangered.  They flower in July and there were several by the path we walked.  The flower spike was quite spectacular.
