We have driven through the Karangahake Gorge numerous times but never stopped to do any of the walks, until last weekend. I highly recommend it. The walk we did, "The Windows Walk" involved a mine tunnel which had large windows in it, from which you could see out down the gorge to the river below. (This gorge was not the main Karangahake Gorge, but a side one.) Torch required. At the end of the tunnel you can go down a series of steps to river level, go across a swing bridge and return along a narrow ledge (with railing) of the gorge. The whole walk took about an hour. The orange colour on the rocks is a lichen.
