If you say "matai", most New Zealanders are likely to think of beautiful flooring, as opposed to the actual tree. That's probably because there are not so many of them left after logging, especially ones of this size. This one was a short walk off the main road between Westport and Karamea. My guess is that it is rata twinning around the trunk, which will eventually kill off the matai.
