The world's largest collection of radio astronomy telescopes. (so they say). There are 27 in total, and probably about half shown in the photo. If viewed from above, they are positioned in the form of a cross. I have no idea why, as we were driving past too early for the information centre to be open. The name is what they are actually called - Very Large Array or VLA for short.
The VLA was run by a Kiwi Dr Peter Napier, best friend at Ruapehu College back in the 60s.
