Gila Cliff Dwellings, New Mexico

Located in the Gila Mountains in natural caves, these dwellings are thought to have been lived in by people of the Mogollon culture between 1275 - 1300 AD.    Archaeologists have identified 46 rooms in the 5 caves.  It is not known why they left the caves, or really very much about the culture, (apart from being very primitive).  A volunteer showing us round did say that no evidence of weapons or warfare had been found and it was assumed they were a peaceful society.
